At Hollyfield, we know that research tells us how important it is to develop reading fluency. Fluency is about more than reading something quickly and involves developing key elements. These are outlined in the image here provided by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).
Adults and more expert readers play a key role in supporting more novice readers to develop their fluency skills. At home, this is something parents are able to support with. Techniques such as modelling these skills by reading aloud to your child, encouraging and supporting your child to use the appropriate intonation and expression will further develop fluency. Talking about how the plot, character and punctuation may influence how we read the text will also help.
If you would like further advice about how to support your child with reading at home, including developing their fluency, please do not hesitate to speak to their class teacher or the English and Reading Lead.
